Americans flock to the beaches of Cancun to escape harsh winter months and the everyday grind in the United States. Miles of hotel-lined beach see an average of 3.3 million visitors a year, luring travelers with all-inclusive deals and booze.
Tired of the slurred conversations, sunburns, and the same guacamole and chips served daily, I searched for a new destination in Mexico. Party crowds were not fulfilling my need for a relaxing and stimulating beach vacation. So like the U.S. gold rush, I headed west. In my attempt to give Mexico a final chance to win my heart, I chose the city of Mérida, located in the Yucatán Peninsula, only to stumble upon a city of depth, intellectual conversation and culinary bliss.
It was in Mérida I discovered authentic cafes, historical architecture, and sophisticated nightlife that excited me. Previous travels to Mexico had left unimpressive impressions, as I found Cabo San Lucas and Cancun to be the same experience – drinking and sunbathing on crowded beaches filled with local vendors attempting to sell me chicle, jewelry, baskets, and pottery. Mezcal served champagne glasses in Mérida ops Anheuser-Busch InBev produced ‘Cornona’ bottles in the tourist trap.
From arrival to departure, I had no complaints. I felt safe, secure, and spent less money than I ever did at an all-inclusive… only to get better service, food, and beaches. Afternoon coffee and pastries for two, totaled eight American dollars. In the United States, I would spend ten at Starbucks for a Venti coffee and pastry. In addition, I spent less money in one week in Merida, than I did for a week in Cabo or Cancun.
The turquoise waters in Cancun can be nice if not crowded, however I discovered a tiny seaside village, Sisal (approximately thirty minutes from the Merida), perfect for unobstructed ocean views and quiet seclusion. Yes, you can get a Cerveza, delicious Mexico Coco-Cola or fresh seafood on the beach, you just won’t have to wait.
If you seek a little more out of life and want to spend more time with like-minded people, I recommend discovering Mérida andSisal for yourself. From inspiration to rejuvanation, this perfect combination of culture and ocean escape, will forever be one of my favorite destinations.
